The Pistachio, both sacred and profane
The pistachio is an ancient plant native to the Mediterranean basin and of Persian origin.
Mentioned in the Old Testament, the pistachio would derive its name from the Syrian city Psitacco and, according to a legend, this fruit was one of the favorite foods of the Queen of Sheba who ordered the entire harvest be destined for her and her court.
Towards the eleventh century, pistachio took on the function of a medicine and became, together with almonds and pine nuts, a basic ingredient for restorative preparations against physical weakness and ageing.
